EU pledges €20m defence package to boost Nigeria's armed forces

The European Union will deliver €20 million in military assistance to Nigeria through the European Peace Facility, Defence Minister Christopher Musa announced…

General Christopher Musa, Nigeria's Defence Minister, announced on Saturday that the European Union will grant €20 million to support the country's defence sector. This financial support operates via the European Peace Facility, established to bolster military and security initiatives among partner states.

The disclosure came after Musa's engagement with Gautier Mignot, EU ambassador accredited to Nigeria and ECOWAS, at Abuja's Defence Ministry offices. The meeting between Musa and Mignot centred on advancing security partnerships and assessing the state of bilateral defence arrangements.

Framed as a working session focused on continental defence challenges, the ambassador's presence underscored Europe's pledge to bolster regional security frameworks. Mignot extended to Musa an invitation to join defence ministers assembled in Brussels for discussions scheduled later this year, demonstrating sustained European engagement on security matters.

Nigeria will host an EU technical mission in November to determine implementation details of the support being provided. The visiting delegation will establish delivery mechanisms, specify equipment types, and arrange operational parameters for the package.

Currency variations appeared in reporting on the funding: while some outlets noted sterling equivalents, the primary statement stressed the euro denomination. Beyond this EU arrangement, Musa noted that Nigeria's military is procuring sophisticated defence systems with support from President Tinubu's government.

The armed forces anticipate receiving ten attack helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and supplementary major operational equipment. Such procurement aims to enhance the military's effectiveness in counter-terrorism campaigns across Nigeria's conflict-affected zones.
