EU Grants €14m for Nigeria's Fibre-Optic Infrastructure

On October 15, the European Union committed €14m in grant funding to support Nigeria's initiative to deploy 90,000 kilometres of fibre-optic infrastructure. This project aims to enhance broadband access and strengthen the digital economy in Nigeria.
The funding will be allocated for network design, technical studies, project preparation, and capacity building as the Federal Government works to improve internet connectivity for underserved communities. The agreement was signed in Abuja by representatives from the Federal Government, the European Union, and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The grant will be administered by the EBRD specifically for preparatory activities related to the nationwide fibre-optic backbone programme. Atiku Bagudu, the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, stated that the partnership would bolster Nigeria's digital infrastructure and support economic development.
He emphasized the importance of institutional development and knowledge transfer for effective project implementation and sustainability.
