The newly launched social media application "W" aims to replace Elon Musk's X by focusing on verified users and adhering to strict regional privacy laws. Officially entering public testing this week, the app has attracted attention from prominent political figures, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa, who support moving away from foreign-dominated platforms.

The app requires users to verify their identity through a companion identity app that scans their passport or national ID, generating an encrypted security string for confirmation. While the platform operates on the decentralized AT Protocol, similar to Bluesky, analysts caution that it faces challenges in a crowded market with competitors like Bulle, Eurosky, and Monnett.

Experts also express concerns about user retention, as mainstream networks prioritize convenience and engagement. The creators of "W" assert that they delete ID data immediately, but trust issues regarding data security remain a significant concern.
