Former Army Spokesman Rabe Abubakar Dies in Captivity

Rabe Abubakar, a retired Major General and former Army spokesman, was abducted by bandits in Katsina State on May 30, alongside his wife. The bandits demanded the release of three detained fighters and the return of livestock allegedly seized during security operations as conditions for their freedom.

On June 6, a video was released showing Abubakar's wife appealing to the Katsina State government. The government confirmed Abubakar's death on Saturday, describing it as a tragic loss.

President Bola Tinubu expressed sorrow over the incident, reiterating the government's uncompromising stance against terrorism and kidnapping. Former military officials, including retired Brigadier General Bashir Adewinbi, criticized the government's inability to protect citizens, stating that Abubakar's death sends a negative message internationally about Nigeria's security situation.

The Defence Headquarters pledged to intensify operations to bring criminals to justice, while also noting the ongoing efforts to secure the release of abducted individuals.
