Shekarau Defects from PDP to APC Amid Political Crisis

Ibrahim Shekarau, the former governor of Kano State, has officially defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This announcement was made on Sunday at a venue adorned with APC posters in Kano.

Shekarau's decision followed extensive consultations and evaluations of his political options, urging support from his followers. He submitted a formal resignation letter dated April 19, 2026, to the ward chairman of Giginyu in the Nassarawa Local Government Area, expressing gratitude to PDP leaders and grassroots members.

His exit from the PDP comes after a month of internal crises within the party, which prompted his political realignment. Earlier in April, Shekarau hinted at leaving the PDP during a visit to APC National Chairman Nentaw Yilwatda and held meetings with President Bola Tinubu and Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, fueling speculation about his next political move.

Shekarau previously governed Kano State from 2003 to 2011 and has a history of political realignment, having defected to the APC in 2018 before rejoining the PDP.
