Ex-LASU VC's Fee Comments Clarified by Aide

Emmanuel Adeyemi, the media aide to the immediate-past Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, addressed the misinterpretation of her remarks regarding the payment of N1m fees by students in public universities. In a statement, Adeyemi clarified that Olatunji-Bello did not imply that students or their parents must pay this amount annually.

Instead, she was discussing the estimated cost of providing quality undergraduate education and advocating for innovative funding sources for universities. Adeyemi emphasized that Olatunji-Bello's comments were made in the context of Nigerians' aspirations for high-quality education comparable to international standards, which he noted costs approximately N1m per student annually.

He reiterated that she did not suggest that this cost should be fully transferred to students or parents. Adeyemi highlighted Olatunji-Bello's call for universities to innovate and develop diversified revenue streams to achieve financial sustainability.
