Weah Warns African Leaders on Democracy Risks at NBA Conference

Former Liberian President George Weah delivered a keynote address at the 66th Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he cautioned African leaders against undermining democracy through political manipulation and the weakening of institutions. He stated that an elected leader could become a tyrant if they disregard constitutional checks and balances.

Weah emphasized that democracy is not solely defined by elections but relies on robust institutions, particularly an independent judiciary and a fearless legal profession. He noted that threats to democracy include not only military coups but also elected governments that erode democratic institutions.

Weah urged lawyers to ensure that court decisions remain binding despite political pressures. He referenced his own decision to concede defeat in Liberia’s 2023 presidential election, prioritizing national peace over personal ambition.

Weah also called for African countries to foster "brain circulation" to utilize the expertise of professionals in the diaspora for national development.
