Former Minister Turner Isoun Passes Away at 87

Turner Isoun, a prominent Nigerian scholar and former minister of science and technology, died at the age of 87 in Abuja on July 15. Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri issued a statement through his Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, describing Isoun as an outstanding scholar and statesman whose contributions to education and technology in Nigeria remain unforgettable.

Isoun served under former President Olusegun Obasanjo from 2000 to 2007 and was recognized as an intellectual giant whose influence extended beyond academia and public service. He was a pioneer vice chancellor of the River State University of Science and Technology and played a significant role in establishing Nigeria's first university of science and technology.

Isoun was also a champion of key reforms in Nigeria's technology sector, including the establishment of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the creation of the Galaxy Backbone to advance the country's satellite program. Governor Diri extended condolences to Isoun's family and the Ijaw community, urging them to find solace in the enduring legacy of the late statesman.
