75-Year-Old Man Sentenced to 10 Years for Defiling Minor

Promis Chukwumatti, a 75-year-old man, was sentenced to ten years imprisonment without the option of a fine for defiling an 11-year-old girl in Rivers State. The Family Court in Port Harcourt, presided over by Justice Rita Oguguo, delivered the judgment on Wednesday.

The court found that Chukwumatti had committed the offense of carnal knowledge of a minor, supported by his oral confession and evidence presented. The court also ordered him to pay 1 million Naira as compensation to the victim's family.

Justice Oguguo emphasized the severity of the crime, noting that the convict had lured the minor with unspecified amounts of money. Although Chukwumatti pleaded for leniency, the court considered the impact on the victim, who is without a mother, and imposed a ten-year sentence.

Precious Ordu, the prosecuting counsel from the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, praised the judgment as a deterrent against similar crimes.
