Adebayo Adelabu Resigns as Power Minister to Pursue Governorship

Adebayo Adelabu, the outgoing Minister of Power, formally tendered his resignation on April 22, 2026, in a letter addressed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with the resignation taking effect on April 30, 2026. Adelabu's decision is aimed at allowing him to concentrate on his gubernatorial aspirations in Oyo State.

In his resignation letter, he stressed the importance of sustaining and consolidating the gains made in the power sector, advocating for stronger coordination at the highest levels, including the appointment of a central authority to harmonize policies and direct execution. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, describing his tenure as a privilege that contributed to national development.

Adelabu also noted that his decision aligns with provisions in the amended Electoral Act of 2026, which prevents serving political office holders from contesting elections. His tenure included significant achievements, such as the implementation of the Electricity Act of 2023 and improvements in the investment climate.
