Collaboration Needed to Combat Osteoporosis in Nigeria

Prof. Temitop Along, the former Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital (UCH) in Ibadan, has called for strong collaboration between the government and the private sector to tackle the increasing cases of bone diseases, particularly osteoporosis, in Nigeria.

Speaking during the official opening of a bone health center in Ibadan, Along warned about the threats posed by osteoporosis, especially among the elderly. He stressed the importance of public enlightenment to prevent such health issues and highlighted that no amount of government funding alone can resolve Nigeria's health problems without the integration of the private sector.

Along urged political leaders to invest in preventive care for the elderly rather than focusing on short-term populist spending. He noted that bone health is often poorly understood by the general public, despite its critical role in the human body, and explained that osteoporosis leads to reduced bone mineral content, making even minor falls potentially dangerous.

Dr. Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, Oyo State Commissioner for Health, described the center as a significant step toward improving the quality of life for elderly residents.
