Gender-Responsive Policies Needed for Climate Displacement

Gender-Responsive Policies Needed for Climate Displacement

During a hybrid multi-stakeholder workshop in Abuja titled "Invisible Frontline: Gender, Climate Stress, and Forced Displacement," Dr. Folahanmi Aina emphasized the need for gender-responsive policies to address the escalating crisis of climate-induced displacement in northern Nigeria.

Aina noted that millions are displaced due to violent conflict, climate change, and economic hardship, with women and children bearing the greatest burden. The workshop aimed to foster collaboration among civil society leaders, policy experts, and humanitarian actors to develop evidence-based policy dialogues.

Aina pointed out that climate stressors, such as desertification and irregular rainfall, exacerbate local grievances and create opportunities for armed groups to exploit vulnerable communities. Maryam Ali, Executive Director of Illimi Children’s Fund, urged the government to recognize teachers as first responders in conflict-affected communities, highlighting the need for trauma-informed training for educators to support displaced learners.

The workshop aimed to contribute to a gender-responsive climate-sensitive policy framework focusing on adaptation and recovery.
