Dr Okorodudu Urges Timely Cataract Treatment for Children

Dr Mejuya Okorodudu, an ophthalmologist and founder of the Africa Cataract & Eye Foundation, cautioned parents in Edo State against delaying cataract treatment for children, as late intervention can lead to permanent visual impairment. Speaking during a free cataract surgery program, which is treating 200 residents, he highlighted that children are particularly at risk due to the critical period of visual development.

Okorodudu noted that cataracts can affect children, not just the elderly, and urged parents to seek prompt medical attention upon noticing signs of poor vision. He emphasized that financial difficulties should not hinder access to medical care, as early diagnosis and treatment can prevent avoidable blindness.

The surgeries are being conducted at Edo Specialist Hospital and a facility in Ologbo community, in collaboration with Tantita & Jovason Groups and the Edo State Government. Dr Cyril Oshiomhole, Edo State Commissioner for Health, supported the initiative, aiming to improve healthcare access for vulnerable residents.
