Experts Warn of Fire Risks in Nigeria's Solar Installations

Experts have linked fire incidents associated with solar energy systems in Nigeria to poor installation practices and the use of substandard components. The Renew Energy Association Nigeria (REAN) issued a statement on Thursday, following a visit by its leadership to the Federal Fire Service, led by Samuel Olumod in Abuja.

The statement highlighted that solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are not inherently prone to fire outbreaks; rather, incidents are typically caused by faulty system design and improper installation and maintenance practices. REAN aims to strengthen collaboration on safety standards within the renewable energy sector and educate the public on safe deployment of solar technologies.

The organization is working with regulatory bodies, including the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency, to enforce compliance with quality standards and promote the use of certified technology. Recent years have seen an increase in solar energy adoption across Nigeria, but safety concerns have grown following notable incidents, including a fire outbreak in a market in Kano on February 14, 2026, and separate incidents in Ibadan in May 2025 and Edo State in October 2025.
