NEMSA Warns of Safety Risks in Solar Panel Installations

The Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) has expressed serious safety concerns regarding the rising number of fire incidents linked to improperly installed rooftop solar photovoltaic systems across Nigeria. In a public notice signed by the Chief Electrical Inspector, NEMSA highlighted that these incidents are often due to poor workmanship, the use of substandard materials, and non-compliance with technical standards and regulations.

To address these issues, NEMSA has released comprehensive safety guidelines for the installation of rooftop solar PV systems, emphasizing the need for qualified professionals to carry out installations. The guidelines mandate that installations be conducted by NEMSA-certified electrical contractors and that proper assessments of the installation site be performed.

NEMSA also warned against using inappropriate mounting structures and stressed the importance of maintaining minimum clearances for safety. Regular maintenance checks and proper battery management are also advised to prevent potential hazards.
