Stroke Action Nigeria Urges Immediate Care on World Stroke Day

Health experts have raised concerns regarding stroke-related deaths and disabilities in Nigeria, attributing these to delayed emergency care. This warning coincides with World Stroke Day on October 29, 2026, as Stroke Action Nigeria, the Nigerian Society of Neurological Sciences, and the Nigerian Stroke Organization work to educate the public on stroke warning signs and the necessity for prompt medical intervention.
The campaign, titled “Know the Signs. #ActFAST. Every Minute Counts,” aims to deliver lifesaving information directly to communities.
Dr Rita Melifonwu, Chief Executive of Stroke Action Nigeria and Board Member of the World Stroke Organisation, stated that late detection and inadequate emergency response lead to preventable fatalities. The campaign promotes the FAST approach to identifying stroke warning signs: Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulties, and the urgency to seek medical help.
The organizations also highlighted modifiable risk factors such as high blood pressure and unhealthy diets. They conducted awareness programs in four secondary schools to educate students on recognizing stroke symptoms and appropriate responses.
