Gaming Firms Urged to Enhance Data Protection Compliance

During a recent webinar organized by SLEC Africa titled "Data Protection and Gaming Compliance," experts urged gaming firms to strengthen their data protection compliance. Yahaya Maikori, Principal Partner at Allianz, and Oluwafemi Fadeyi from KC Game Network discussed the increasing importance of data protection in the gaming sector, particularly in Nigeria.

They noted that the country's data protection framework is rooted in the right to privacy as guaranteed by Section 37 of the Constitution and further strengthened by the Nigerian Data Protection Act. The speakers highlighted the reputational risks firms face when user data is mishandled, which can erode customer trust.

They outlined compliance principles, including the need for organizations to appoint a Data Protection Officer (DPO) and conduct regular data mapping exercises. The discussion also addressed the complexities of cross-border data transfers and the obligations organizations have to process user data responsibly, warning of potential financial penalties and legal actions for non-compliance.
