Timi Kakandar Celebrates Efik Culture in New Exhibition

Timi Kakandar's exhibition titled "Efik Elegance" opened on March 28 at Victoria Island, Lagos, presenting a visual celebration of Efik culture. The exhibit featured live dancers adorned in colorful costumes, embodying the essence of Efik heritage.

Kakandar's work includes ten paintings characterized by vibrant colors and intricate elements such as coral beads and floral motifs, emphasizing the dignity and pride of Efik women. The exhibition reflects the historical evolution of Efik dress influenced by Portuguese contact over 150 years, incorporating Victorian gown elements into traditional attire.

Kakandar highlights the complex heritage of the Efik people, acknowledging the darker aspects of history, including the enslavement of individuals captured by Efik traders. The artist, a 1999 graduate of the University of Port Harcourt, has held 30 exhibitions both locally and internationally, known for his bold use of color and profound exploration of human form.
