Police IG Orders Dismissal of Officers in Killing Case

On April 26, 2026, a police operation in Effurun, Delta State, resulted in the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi. Following this incident, the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, approved the dismissal and criminal prosecution of the officers involved.

A statement from the Nigeria Police Force, signed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Anthony Okon, indicated that the decision followed the conclusions of a disciplinary committee that found the officers had grossly violated operational rules and the principles of police conduct. The officers connected to the incident were immediately withdrawn from the Delta State Command and transferred to the police headquarters in Abuja for expedited disciplinary processes.

The committee's recommendations were ratified by the Inspector General, who emphasized that police officers do not have the right to take life outside the provisions of the law and assured that the process would be transparent. The incident gained attention after a viral video showed Ogidi being shot during the police operation.
