ExxonMobil Launches STEM Initiative for African Students

ExxonMobil, through its affiliate in Nigeria, collaborated with Junior Achievement Nigeria to launch the third edition of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) initiative on May 9, 2024, at the Shehu Musa Yar'Adua Centre in Abuja. The program is designed to build student confidence and interest in STEM-related careers, targeting 4,000 students across 30 schools in Africa.

Olaolu Akogun, the Executive Director of Junior Achievement Nigeria, described the initiative as a celebration of partnership and innovation aimed at shaping the future of young Africans in STEM education. The program will extend beyond Nigeria to include Mozambique, Namibia, and Angola.

Nigel Cookei Gam from ExxonMobil emphasized the importance of STEM education in driving economic growth and sustainable development. The initiative will feature zonal competitions and an online Kahoot STEM quiz competition, with 1,500 students aged 14-18 expected to participate.

The program focuses on AI literacy, design thinking, and mentorship, with GSS Gwako, Gwagwalada, winning the first place in the recent competition.
