FAAN to Temporarily Shut Down Lagos Airport Terminal for Major Rehabilitation in March 2026

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has revealed plans to temporarily close Terminal 1 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos in March 2026. The shutdown is necessary to facilitate extensive rehabilitation and expansion works aimed at resolving longstanding structural and operational challenges.

The closure is expected to last for one month as part of efforts to modernize the terminal to meet international standards. The decision follows a series of incidents caused by faults in the electrical supply system, prompting the need for reconstruction work that commenced on September 4, 2025.

The Nigerian government had earlier approved N712 billion for the refurbishment and modernization of Terminal 1. FAAN acknowledges the inconveniences the closure may cause but emphasizes the long-term benefits of the comprehensive rehabilitation project.
