FAAN Apologizes for Power Outage at Lagos Airport Terminal, Explains Cause

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) issued a statement on February 1, 2026, explaining a temporary power outage at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) Terminal 1 in Lagos on January 31, 2026. The outage was due to a fault in the terminal's changeover circuit.

FAAN apologized to passengers for the inconvenience caused and assured that the technical team promptly resolved the issue to minimize disruptions. The agency acknowledged the incident exposed longstanding infrastructure challenges at Terminal 1 and mentioned plans for a comprehensive modernization project.

This incident occurred amidst ongoing rehabilitation and expansion projects at MMIA Terminal 1, approved in August 2025 for a 22-month overhaul costing N712 billion. The project includes reconstruction, remodeling, repairs, upgrades to airport facilities, security systems, airfield lighting, and more.

Additionally, FAAN is piloting a cashless payment system at Nigerian airports to boost revenue, with full implementation targeted by the first quarter of 2026.
