Nigerian Government to Close Lagos Airport Terminal for Two-Year Rehabilitation

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced a major infrastructure development plan involving the closure of Terminal 1 at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos for a two-year rehabilitation project. The closure, set to begin in March 2026, is part of a broader effort to modernize Nigeria's aviation infrastructure.

The rehabilitation and expansion work is expected to last for 22 months. Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), disclosed that the decision was made due to the overstretching of Terminal 1 caused by the increase in passenger traffic.

During the closure, international flight operations will be temporarily moved to a newly constructed 8,000 square meter departure terminal. The temporary terminal is already 90% complete and will accommodate outbound international flights.

Passengers are advised to arrive earlier than usual to ensure smooth travel operations. The rehabilitation project aims to transform Terminal 1 into a modern and efficient facility with improved passenger flow, upgraded systems, and better service delivery.
