INEC Chairman Amupitan Faces Resignation Calls Over X Account

Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is under scrutiny following allegations linking him to a controversial X account that made partisan comments during the 2023 elections. Critics, including political parties and civil society organizations, have called for his resignation, arguing that his perceived partisanship undermines the credibility of Nigeria's electoral process.

The account in question, created on September 6, 2022, and later renamed, reportedly posted comments interpreted as supportive of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu. Amupitan has denied operating the account, asserting his political neutrality.

INEC's Chief Press Secretary, Adedayo Oketola, described the account as fake, emphasizing that it underwent multiple changes. Investigations revealed a digital trail linking the account to Amupitan, but the evidence remains inconclusive.

The situation has intensified discussions about the integrity of electoral bodies in Nigeria.
