INEC Chairman Amupitan Faces Resignation Calls Over Allegations

Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), is under pressure to resign following allegations connecting him to a controversial social media account that reportedly supported Bola Tinubu during the 2023 presidential elections.

The account, initially linked to Amupitan, was found to have posted partisan content, raising concerns about the neutrality of INEC ahead of future elections. A fact-check by Daily Trust revealed that the account, created on September 6, 2022, changed its name to "sundayvibe00" on April 10, 2026, while maintaining the same user ID, which has raised suspicions of impersonation.

Despite denials from Amupitan's media aide and claims that the account is fake, the investigation concluded that credible evidence links the account to Amupitan. This situation has intensified debates about the integrity of Nigeria's electoral process, with critics arguing that Amupitan's perceived political leanings could undermine public confidence in election outcomes.
