INEC Chairman Denies Fake APC Victory Post Claims

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, responded to claims linking him to a social media post that celebrated the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC). INEC dismissed these claims as false, stating that Amupitan does not manage the account in question, which was identified as a parody account.

The commission released a statement through its media office, emphasizing the need to combat the spread of misinformation that could damage the chairman's reputation, especially as INEC prepares for future elections. The statement also highlighted that several fake accounts impersonating the chairman have been reported to security agencies.

INEC is working with cyber experts to track down the individuals behind these fraudulent posts, warning that they will face legal consequences under Nigeria's Cybercrime Act. The commission urged the public to rely on official INEC channels for accurate information and to remain focused on conducting free and fair elections across the country.

Amupitan assumed office as INEC chairman in October 2025 and has faced criticism regarding the commission's neutrality ahead of the 2027 general elections.
