Viral Abuja Shooting Video Misleading, Fact Check Reveals

A video circulating on social media, purportedly showing terrorists shooting in Abuja, has been fact-checked by Daily Trust and found to be misleading. The video gained significant traction, amassing 210,000 views and 1,894 likes by April 9, 2026.

Verification efforts, including reverse image searches and geolocation analysis, traced the footage to the Mpape area within the Katampe region of Abuja. Although the video appeared genuine, with an 83% confidence score from a deepfake analysis tool, eyewitness accounts from residents indicated that the environment remained calm at the time of the video's posting.

Furthermore, there were no credible media reports or official police confirmations of a gunfire attack in the area on that date. The analysis underscores the potential for misinformation to trigger public panic, especially given Abuja's strategic importance as Nigeria's capital.
