Nigeria's Government Tightens Rules on Official Foreign Trips

The Federal Government of Nigeria has issued a directive prohibiting ministers, heads of ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as other government appointees, from undertaking official foreign trips without prior approval from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF). This directive, signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, also requires the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure that valid approval from the OSGF is mandatory for processing official travel documents, including visas.

This move follows scrutiny regarding individuals, such as Prince Adeniyi Adeyemi, who falsely claimed to represent the Federal Government. The circular emphasizes the need for accountability and adherence to established procedures for official travel, citing previous circulars aimed at regulating such activities.

The government has noted ongoing non-compliance with these regulations, prompting the need for this broader directive to ensure effective coordination of government business.
