Falana Urges Suspension of Early Political Campaigns

Femi Falana, a prominent human rights lawyer, has called for an immediate suspension of ongoing political campaigns in Nigeria, warning that premature political activities could undermine governance and exacerbate the country's rising insecurity. His statement follows the announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that presidential elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, and governorship elections for February 6, 2027.

Despite the elections being ten months away, Falana noted that political parties have intensified their campaigns, neglecting essential public service delivery. He linked the neglect of governance to worsening insecurity, citing a rise in kidnappings and killings across Nigeria.

Falana criticized the misallocation of public funds towards illegal campaign activities instead of addressing critical sectors like education. He reminded political parties of the Electoral Act, which stipulates that campaign periods should commence 150 days before elections.

He urged INEC and security agencies to enforce compliance with the law and halt further political campaigns.
