Falana Calls for Suspension of Early Political Campaigns

Femi Falana, a prominent human rights lawyer, has urged the immediate suspension of ongoing political campaigns in Nigeria, warning that premature political activities could undermine governance and exacerbate insecurity across the country. His call comes after the Independent National Electoral Commission announced that presidential elections will take place on January 16, 2027, followed by governorship and state house assembly elections on February 6, 2027.

Despite the elections being ten months away, Falana noted that political parties have already intensified their campaigns, sidelining essential public service delivery. He linked the neglect of governance to rising insecurity, citing increased cases of kidnapping and killings in various parts of Nigeria.

Falana criticized the misallocation of public funds towards illegal campaign activities instead of addressing critical sectors like education. He reminded political parties of the Electoral Act, which stipulates that campaigns should commence 150 days before elections, and called on the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies to enforce compliance with the law.
