Falana Urges Compliance with Police Act on Legal Rights

Femi Falana, a prominent human rights lawyer, called on Inspector General of Police Olatunji Disu to ensure compliance with the Nigeria Police Act 2020, particularly regarding the legal rights of suspects. Falana highlighted the importance of notifying families upon arrest and the right to legal representation, while also prohibiting civil wrongs during arrests.

He made these remarks during a visit to the Inspector General's headquarters in Abuja, representing a delegation of civil society organizations (CSOs). Falana congratulated Disu on his appointment and praised his vision for a police force focused on protecting human rights.

The delegation included notable figures from various legal and human rights organizations. In response, IG Disu expressed appreciation for the engagement with civil society and reaffirmed his commitment to a people-centered police force, emphasizing ongoing reforms, improved training, and accountability measures to address serious crimes and enhance public trust.
