Femi Falana Advocates Human Rights with IGP Disu

On Thursday, Femi Falana, a prominent human rights lawyer, led a delegation of civil society organizations (CSOs) to meet with Inspector General of Police (IGP) Olatunji Rilwan Disu at the police headquarters in Abuja. The delegation included notable figures such as Adesina Ok from the Nigerian Association of Democratic Lawyers, Okek Chinwik from the African Law Foundation, and representatives from Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch.

During the meeting, Falana raised significant human rights issues affecting Nigerian society, emphasizing the importance of strict adherence to the Nigeria Police Act 2020, particularly regarding the notification of families upon arrest and the right to legal representation. IGP Disu expressed gratitude for the engagement with civil society and reiterated his commitment to a people-centered approach to policing, addressing crime, and ensuring accountability.

He assured the delegation of ongoing reforms, including enhanced training for officers and the establishment of a complaints response unit to monitor police conduct.
