Oshoala Substituted Tactically in Nigeria's WAFCON Win

During Nigeria's 6-2 victory over Egypt in the WAFCON tournament, Asisat Oshoala, the CAF Women’s Player of the Year, was substituted just before half-time. Coach Justine Madugu explained that the decision was tactical, as Oshoala's energy levels were dropping, which allowed the Egyptian defense to settle.

Oshoala had opened the scoring for Nigeria with a penalty in the 21st minute and has now scored twice in the tournament, following her goal in Nigeria's 1-0 win over Zambia. Madugu emphasized the need for high intensity in play, prompting the substitution.

Oshoala has won four WAFCON titles with Nigeria and aims to help the team secure a record-extending 11th title while also qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup. She expressed the importance of support from fans, especially after the Super Eagles' failure to qualify for the World Cup.

Nigeria will face Cameroon in the quarter-finals next.
