Lagos Police Deny Tear Gas Use Against Pensioners Protest

On August 31, 2026, the Lagos State Police Command refuted claims that officers used tear gas against pensioners during a protest in Alausa, Lagos. The protest, led by Michael Omishade, chairman of the Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP), and Agnes Funmi Sesse, chairperson of the Nigeria Labour Congress, involved approximately 500 pensioners demanding payment of outstanding entitlements related to unpaid pension adjustments and wage awards.

The protest began at 8:30 AM at the Governor’s Office and concluded peacefully around 4:30 PM after a three-hour meeting with Tayo Akinmade Ayinde, Chief of Staff to the Lagos State Governor. Abimbola Adebisi, spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, stated that no tear gas was deployed and that the protest was peaceful, with no major incidents reported.

Femi Falana, a human rights lawyer, called for action against any police officers who may have used tear gas.
