Police Clarifies Role on Roaming Cows in Abuja

CSP Ani Iniedu, the spokesperson for the Nigeria Police Force, announced that the responsibility for controlling roaming cows in Abuja does not fall under the police's mandate. During a joint security spokespersons’ briefing on Tuesday, Iniedu explained that the relevant environmental authorities are tasked with managing animals, including cattle.

Police intervention is only warranted if the animals are involved in an offense, cause property damage, or trespass. Iniedu stated that if a cow commits an offense, the police would investigate any formal complaints made.

This statement comes in response to growing concerns about cattle roaming freely on major roads in Abuja, which raises issues of public safety and potential property damage. Additionally, Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, recently apologized for the ongoing presence of cows on Abuja streets, acknowledging the situation despite efforts by the FCT Administration to address it.
