U.S. Farmers Struggle as Fertilizer Prices Soar Amid Conflict

Farmers in the United States are experiencing severe uncertainties as fertilizer prices surge, primarily due to disruptions in global supply chains caused by the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran. Jim Martin, a farmer from Illinois, described the situation as deeply troubling, noting that fertilizer input costs remain extremely high despite having secured supplies for the current planting season.

According to Veronica Nigh, chief economist at the Fertilizer Institute, approximately 35% of U.S. fertilizer imports come from the Middle East, and the price of urea and nitrogen fertilizers has increased nearly 30% per short ton from February 27 to March 6. Zippi Duval, president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, warned that these disruptions threaten crop output and could ripple through the broader economy.

Farmers like Aaron Lehman from Iowa are concerned about the financial strain, with many relying on loans to stay afloat. The rising costs of fertilizers and low crop prices may lead to reduced fertilizer application and lower crop yields, further impacting farmers' revenues.
