Favour Ashe emerged victorious in the men's 100 metres at the Commonwealth Games trials held in Lagos on Tuesday, posting a personal best time of 9.93 seconds. The Delta State sprinter achieved this breakthrough performance at the Yaba College of Technology sports complex.

During semi-final action earlier that day, he had already signalled his intent with a wind-assisted 9.97 seconds before bettering that result in the championship race. Nigeria's leading sprint prospect faced substantial obstacles en route to this success.

Visa complications prevented him from training abroad and disrupted his preparation arrangements throughout the previous year. Despite these setbacks, Ashe has regained his competitive edge and now stands as a cornerstone athlete for Nigeria's 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games squad.

The field proved highly competitive overall. Nichola Adekalu Fakored, representing Mississippi State University, earned second with 9.98 seconds representing his personal best.

Third place honours went to Chidera Ezeakor, whose 10.03-second effort constituted his personal record. Among female competitors, Patience Okon George topped the 400 metres podium with 51.85 seconds, whilst Bless Ogundinran claimed the women's 100 metres crown at 11.12 seconds.

Several other disciplines produced impressive displays of athleticism. Men's shot put saw Chukwuebuka Enekwechi claim the title at these trials.

These results underscore the exceptional standard of performances across multiple track and field events, as Nigerian athletes pursue selection for the forthcoming Commonwealth Games roster.
