FBI Arrests Emylee Thai in $100M Medicare Fraud Case

Emylee Thai was arrested in Vietnam by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) for her alleged involvement in a healthcare fraud scheme that siphoned over $100 million from the US Medicare system. Thai had been on the run since 2022 and was believed to have been hiding in Vietnam since at least 2023.

FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest, highlighting the agency's collaboration with international law enforcement to secure her return to the United States for prosecution. Thai faces charges including conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and conspiracy to defraud the United States.

As a former medical laboratory owner in Houston, Texas, she was accused of participating in a large-scale Medicare genetic-testing and kickback scheme, where her laboratory allegedly billed Medicare approximately $142 million and received around $95 million in payments. Investigators claimed the scheme involved unnecessary genetic tests, with marketers obtaining signed doctors' orders and patient DNA samples to refer to Thai's laboratory in exchange for a share of Medicare reimbursements.
