FCCPC Warns Bakery Operators Against Unsafe Practices

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) issued a warning to importers, manufacturers, distributors, and operators in the bakery and confectionery sector regarding the use of unsafe substitutes and misleading consumers amid rising production costs. This warning was delivered by the Executive Vice Chairman, Tunji Bello, on Tuesday during a stakeholder engagement organized by the South-West Zonal Office of the FCCPC at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Represented by the South-West Zonal Coordinator, Dr Olubunmi Otti, Bello stressed the critical nature of food safety and consumer confidence, noting that millions of Nigerians consume baked products daily. He highlighted that effective consumer protection encompasses the entire production chain, including sourcing, hygiene, and labeling.

Bello stated that the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 mandates that consumers receive goods suitable for their intended purposes and warned against compromising food safety for profit. He cautioned operators against using harmful additives or misleading marketing practices.
