FCCPC and WASPAN Settle Contempt Dispute in Court

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the Wireless Application Service Providers Association of Nigeria (WASPAN) resolved a contempt dispute as the Federal High Court in Lagos, presided over by Justice Ambrose Lewis Allagoa, struck out the contempt proceedings initiated by WASPAN against the FCCPC. The contempt proceedings were part of a larger regulatory suit concerning the FCCPC's Digital Economy Online Non-Traditional Consumer Lending Guidelines 2025.

WASPAN alleged that the FCCPC unlawfully extended its regulatory powers over sectors already supervised by other agencies. Kemi Pinheiro SAN, leading the plaintiff's team, withdrew the contempt application, allowing the court to hear substantive applications regarding the suit.

The FCCPC defended its authority, asserting that it was enabled by law to regulate across sectors. The court has adjourned the matter until July 20, 2026, for judgment.
