APC's FCT Poll Victory Intensifies Political Rivalry

The recent area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have heightened competition between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and opposition parties. The APC secured five out of six area council seats, which analysts interpret as a potential turnaround for the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

The elections were held on a Saturday, and the results have sparked debates regarding the consolidation of power by the ruling party. Notably, the APC's performance contrasts with previous presidential elections, where they faced significant losses.

In 2015, APC's Muhammadu Buhari lost to Goodluck Jonathan, and in 2023, Labour Party's Peter Obi won the FCT by a wide margin. The APC's recent success is seen as a strategic move to strengthen its foothold in the nation's capital.

However, the opposition, including the PDP and ADC, has raised concerns about the electoral process, alleging manipulation and logistical failures. Political analysts suggest that while the results may signal early positioning for 2027, they do not guarantee future outcomes.
