FCT Lawmaker Obika Defects from Labour Party to APC

On Wednesday, a member representing the Bwari Federal Constituency, Obika, announced his defection from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In a letter addressed to the House, he attributed his decision to the ongoing leadership crisis that has plagued the Labour Party, creating deep divisions and multiple factions that hinder its functionality.

Obika explained that several attempts to resolve the internal disputes within the Labour Party had not yielded positive results, leading to a weakened party structure and affecting its internal democracy. He pointed to the recent area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory as an example of how the party's internal crises negatively impacted its political operations.

Furthermore, he noted the party's failure to upload its candidates' names to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which led to disenfranchisement of its supporters. Obika's decision to leave was also influenced by sustained pressure from political stakeholders within his constituency, who repeatedly urged him to return to the APC, which he described as his political family.
