Wike Defends Tinubu's Economic Reforms Amid Hardship

During a monthly media briefing in Abuja on Tuesday, Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, defended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's economic reforms, particularly the removal of the petrol subsidy. Wike described this decision as one of the boldest actions taken by any Nigerian leader in recent decades.

He acknowledged that while the reforms have caused temporary hardship for many Nigerians, they have also improved the financial positions of state governments, increased funding for infrastructure, and reduced reliance on bank loans for salary payments. Wike stated that the economic challenges Nigeria faces have accumulated over many years and cannot be resolved quickly.

He characterized the former fuel subsidy regime as unsustainable and recalled that during his tenure as governor, declining allocations often forced states to borrow from banks to meet salary obligations. The removal of the subsidy has led to increased allocations to states, allowing them to meet salary and pension obligations while investing more in infrastructure.

Wike emphasized that effective leadership requires the courage to make difficult decisions in the national interest, even if they are initially unpopular.
