FCT Police Announce Movement Restrictions for Elections

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has announced vehicular and human movement restrictions across Abuja and its environs ahead of the area council elections scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026. The statement, issued by Police Public Relations Officer Josephine Adeh, indicates that the restrictions will be in effect from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM on election day to ensure adequate security and the smooth conduct of the polls.

The restrictions have been approved by Miller G. Dantaway, the Commissioner of Police for the FCT, as part of efforts to maintain law and order during the elections.

Essential services are exempt from these restrictions. Residents are urged to remain peaceful and cooperate with security agencies to ensure a safe and credible electoral process.

Earlier, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, declared Friday as a work-free day to allow residents to travel and participate in the elections. President Bola Tinubu also introduced separate movement restrictions from 8:00 PM on Friday to 6:00 PM on Saturday.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reported that 1,587,025 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have been collected across the FCT, representing 94.4% of the 1,680,315 registered voters.
