FCT Teachers Consider Strike After Meeting with Wike

Teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) are deliberating a strike following a high-level meeting with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike on Thursday. The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) described the discussions as productive but acknowledged ongoing grievances that remain unaddressed.

Abdulahi Shafa, chairman of the NUT FCT wing, stated that the union would consult its members before making a final decision regarding the strike. The meeting focused on challenges affecting teachers across primary, junior, and senior secondary schools, including unpaid allowances and inadequate staffing.

Minister Wike promised immediate action on the issues raised, which had not been fully acknowledged previously. The FCT administration has taken steps to address funding challenges in basic education, including redirecting internal revenue allocations to ensure direct payments to teachers.

The union plans to reconvene to announce its final position, with a strike potentially commencing on Monday if demands remain unmet.
