Aisha Yesufu Urges Wike to Intervene in Teachers' Strike

Aisha Yesufu, an activist, has urged Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, to intervene in the ongoing indefinite strike by teachers in Abuja, which commenced on April 20, 2026. The strike was initiated by the Nigeria Union of Teachers, FCT Wing, due to unresolved welfare issues and the non-implementation of a committee report submitted in August 2025.

Yesufu highlighted the dire consequences of the strike on schoolchildren, emphasizing that when teachers strike, it is the students who suffer first. She noted that the committee tasked with addressing teachers' entitlements and promotions, inaugurated in July 2025, has yet to release its report, further exacerbating the crisis.

Yesufu called for immediate action to prevent a total shutdown of schools, stressing that the government must prioritize the education system and address the bureaucratic delays affecting teachers' welfare. The union has indicated that teachers across six area councils will continue their strike until their demands are met, including the release and implementation of the committee's report.
