FEC Approves Carter Bridge Demolition and Reconstruction

On March 4, 2026, the Federal Executive Council (FEC), led by President Bola Tinubu, approved the demolition and reconstruction of the Carter Bridge in Lagos. Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed that the project is part of a broader initiative to strengthen critical transport infrastructure across Nigeria.

The council allocated N320 billion for the new cable-stayed bridge, which is considered a more durable and cost-effective alternative to full-scale repairs estimated at N380 billion. Umahi explained that technical assessments indicated the existing structure is no longer viable for rehabilitation.

The FEC also approved several other major road and bridge projects aimed at improving connectivity and addressing previously stalled infrastructure across the country. The reconstruction of the Carter Bridge is part of the federal government's plan to commission at least four major road projects across the six geopolitical zones.
