FEC Approves N5.6 Billion Reconstruction of Carter Bridge

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the demolition and complete reconstruction of the Carter Bridge in Lagos, as confirmed by the Lagos State government on Wednesday. The decision was announced during a cabinet meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.

Minister of Works David Umahi revealed that the council approved a budget of N5.6 billion to hire a special engineering consultant for the design and cost assessment of the new bridge. Umahi stated that the existing Carter Bridge can no longer be rehabilitated and must be entirely rebuilt.

This decision follows extensive consultations with stakeholders and previous discussions received by the FEC in earlier sessions. The Carter Bridge is a critical infrastructure on one of Lagos's busiest roadways, connecting the island to the mainland and serving as a key route for daily commuters and commercial traffic.

Additionally, the FEC approved six other large-scale infrastructure projects during the same meeting, aimed at upgrading and reconstructing major highways across multiple geopolitical zones.
