Federal Government Enhances Media Literacy for Security

On July 30, 2026, during the 2026 South-East Regional Security Summit at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, Abia State, the Honourable Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, FNIPR, emphasized the importance of media literacy and responsible digital citizenship in combating insecurity. He noted that criminal elements exploit misinformation and hate speech to destabilize communities.

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, the National Orientation Agency, and the International Media and Information Literacy Institute (IMILI), is promoting media literacy and critical thinking skills to empower citizens against falsehoods. Idris commended journalists for their professionalism and urged them to avoid sensationalism.

He outlined the comprehensive security strategy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration, which includes military operations and intelligence-led policing. Idris also highlighted significant successes against various criminal activities since May 2023 and the ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation with international partners on counter-terrorism.
