FMLD Launches Pest Control in Abia State for Livestock

On June 29, 2026, the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development (FMLD) commenced a pest control surveillance exercise in Abia State, part of the South-East and South-South geopolitical zones. The initiative, led by Mr.

Gilbert Okoro, aims to combat the tse-tse fly, a pest that adversely affects livestock and can transmit diseases such as trypanosomiasis. During the visit to the Abia State Agricultural Commission, Dr.

Cliff Agbez represented the Permanent Secretary of the Abia Ministry of Agriculture, Dr. Adamma Aguwa.

The project is designed to reduce the incidence of the tse-tse fly, thereby improving livestock quality and agricultural output. It aligns with the World Health Organization's health initiatives to enhance farmer health and crop yields.

The project will cover six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, targeting three senatorial districts in Abia. The team will also visit veterinary teaching hospitals as part of their efforts.
